Baked Donuts with Chocolate Glaze

Baked Donuts with Chocolate Glaze

My daughter recently celebrated her 9th birthday (gulp, is she really that old? Time is flying by way too fast!) and she wanted me to make homemade donuts for her party instead of a cake. I just got a new donut baking pan so I was excited to put it to use. She wanted plain donuts with a chocolate glaze. The donuts were super simple to make and so was the chocolate glaze. The girls all decorated their own donuts and loved them. They all agreed that I should make these donuts for the food blog (which is good because I had leftover chocolate glaze to use up).

Both of my kids had a tough day at school yesterday so I decided to cheer them up with another batch of homemade baked donuts. It worked… they both had fun decorating them (notice the massive amounts of sprinkles on each donut) and they really enjoyed eating them.

This donut post has been added to the No Croutons Required roundup.

How to Make Baked Donuts with Chocolate Glaze

Ingredients:

Donuts:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Coat the donut baking tray with cooking spray.

Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl. Add the buttermilk, egg, vanilla, and melted butter. Mix until well combined.

Transfer the batter into a large zip lock bag. Snip off a corner of the bag and pipe the batter evenly into a 6 cup donut pan.

Bake for 9-10 minutes, or until the dough is set and springy (they won’t be golden brown). Let them sit for 1-2 minutes then place the donuts on a baking rack to cool a bit.

Chocolate Glaze:

  • 2 1/2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 oz semisweet bar or chocolate chips
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp hot water
  • Sprinkles for garnish

While the donuts are baking prepare the glaze.  In a heatproof bowl over simmering water, melt the butter and chocolate chips (if using a bar, chop them into small pieces).  Remove the bowl from the heat and whisk in the powdered sugar, vanilla, and hot water until smooth.

To glaze the donuts, dip each one face-down into the glaze.

Immediately garnish with sprinkles then let them cool for a few minutes on a wire rack right side up. Enjoy!!

Fairy Hobmother :   **CONTEST CLOSED – WINNER WAS CHOSEN**

I was recently visiting the blog There’s Always Time to Cook and she had a post about being visited by the Fairy Hobmother who happens to present Amazon gift cards to bloggers. All I had to do was comment on her blog about what I would want from Amazon if the Fairy Hobmother visited me and I said a donut baking pan. Simple? Yes, but something I have wanted for a long time now. A few days later I was visited by the Fairy Hobmother who granted me my wish and sent me an Amazon gift card so I could buy my donut pan and four amazing cookbooks that I have been wanting. Thank you so much for the generous gift Fairy Hobmother!!!

So now you, my dear readers, get a chance to be visited by the Fairy Hobmother too. All you have to do is comment on this post and tell me and the Fairy what it is you would buy with an Amazon gift card… who knows, you may have your wish granted just like I did. Good luck!

  1. I just found your blog today – did no one really comment on this post??? This shocks me very much! I’m sure a month later, it’s irrelevant, but I would LOVE to have a donut pan like yours – I’ve never had one, and have always wanted to make donuts. 🙂 I am going to do some more exploring of your blog now…

  2. I want a donut pan too! It looks super sweet! I was wondering how people bake donuts, and while there are surely more ways than that- what an easy way to getter done! 🙂 Also, I would be in heaven to see a printed inventory of all of your fantastic recipes! I genuinely love your blog (er… website now?). You’re wonderful.

  3. I had no idea one could get a donut pan. I would make homemade baked doughnuts for my 3 and 2 year old boys all the time. I’m so glad I found your blog today.

  4. I think I forgot to check your site after you moved. Whoops. Anyway, I’d like to get a spice rack. All of my spices unorganized in a cabinet just isn’t cutting it. I need to try out this recipe for my kids…looks delicious! Love your blog and have made a few things so far. Thanks!

  5. Your blog is fantastic and those doughnut looks great. My 10 year old daughter and I will have to try these. We made red velvet ones and they were great. I could really use a food mill or some of the cook books I have been wanting like, Cook like a Rockstar or the new America’s Test Kitchen Healthy Cooking.

  6. What a wonderful and generous idea!! I love it! Please thank the fairy from us. 🙂

Ah…what would my wish be? I suppose a doughnut pan would be lovely. However, if the fairy prefers to change things up with each gift…a cast iron grill pan would also be pretty groovy!

  7. I would love a really good cast iron skillet. I had one in the past but it was a rather cheap one and I hated using it because the thing never seemed to heat evenly. I eventually gave it away to goodwill. But, now I am really wanting a good quality one and I have a stack of recipes just wishing for one also. I LOVE your site by the way, I can almost always find something that makes me drool when I visit. Thanks!!

  8. I love the idea of a baked doughnut, and these are so cute! I think I might try a doughnut pan and either Pioneer Woman’s new cookbook or teaching books with an Amazon gift card. Thanks!

  9. Hi, I am really interested in making the baked donuts for my kids. My question is can I use milk as a substitute for buttermilk.
    Thanks

  10. They look amazing!! I should NOT get a donut pan or I would be making these every morning! Amazon is amazing – they have everything!! I buy children’s books for my classroom from their site. I have been oogling over some glass containers. Someday I will buy them!

  11. Thanks for the recipe. I recieved a standard and mini doughnut pan for christmas and I am so looking forward to trying it out with your recipe. The next thing I want to try is making candy using isomalt to make jewels for my daughter’s birthday cake but I have to add the molds and isomalt to my wish list!

  12. What would I want from Amazon? OH the list goes on and on but right now I am looking at Scandinavian Almond Cake Pan and maybe a couple cookbooks. Love cookbooks!

  13. if the offer still available i would like a donut baking pan too…i live in a small town from romania and i didn’t find the donut baking pan here. i love the donuts… we make in a different way! but when i find a donut baking pan i will make your recipe and i’ll send you photos! kisses!

  14. The donuts look yummy! I like donuts but love making cookies. If the fairy would visit me I would like the King Arthur Cookie Companion Book ! I really, really like cook books oh they are so great! Thank you ” For the love of cooking” for sharing your talent and time .

  15. Might be a dumb question…but can you do these freestyle if you don’t have a donut pan? If you just pipe them into a circle, will the batter hold up or not?

    1. I am not sure if they would work or not, it is possible because the batter is quite thick. FYI, I got my donut pan for close to $10 at Target.

      Cheers,
      Pam
