Hot Buttered Rum

Hot Buttered Rum

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! We had a great Thanksgiving, which we spent with two of my oldest and dearest childhood friends and their families. Our good friend Joe made the most delicious meal and he and his wife Molly were the best dinner hosts ever.

After a busy holiday weekend, we headed out this afternoon to find a Christmas tree at a local tree farm. After searching around and finding the perfect tree, we cut it down and headed home. I decided to make us a hot drink to warm us up on this cold and rainy day. I found a recipe for hot buttered rum and was so excited to see that the original recipe was from The Duchin Room in the Sun Valley Lodge. I am from the Sun Valley area and have been in the Duchin Room many times. Their hot buttered rum is the best in town so I knew it was going to be decadent and delicious. I made two with the rum and two without for the kids. We all enjoyed these delicious drinks while we decorated the Christmas tree.

How to Make a Hot Buttered Rum

Using a hand mixer, beat the butter brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt together in a bowl, until creamy and smooth. Transfer the mixture to a large glass measuring cup (at least 4 cups or larger).  Add the boiling water to the mixture and stir until the butter mixture dissolves. Add a shot of rum to each mug. Pour the well-mixed butter/water mixture into the mugs evenly. Stir well and serve with a cinnamon stick. Side Note: You may dilute the drinks with more boiling water if it’s too sweet.

  1. This is not too different from a hot toddy. I knew someone who loved hot toddys, and always took a thermos of them along when ice skating in Connecticut. That was back when cocktails were considered appropriate for most occasions.

Glad you had a nice Thanksgiving, and a fun Christmas Tree hunt.

  2. i feel a bit squeamish about the idea of drinking butter, but this has so much other good stuff in it. perhaps i’ll be brave enough to try it soon. 🙂

  3. Looks yummy. This is not very not the same as a hot hard stuff. I knew somebody who adored hot toddy’s, and dependably took a bottle of them along when ice skating in Connecticut. That was back when mixed drinks were viewed as proper for most occasions.Glad you had a pleasant Thanksgiving, and a fun Christmas Tree chase.
