Oat, Banana, Carrot, and Parsley Dog Treats

Oat, Banana, Carrot, and Parsley Dog Treats

Grace ate her last dog treat this morning so I decided to make her a new batch. She has loved both the peanut butter treats and the apple, bacon, and cheddar treats that I’ve previously made but I decided to try something different this time. I liked the idea of this recipe because you use blended oats as the flour along with some other healthy ingredients like carrot, banana, egg, olive oil, and breath-freshening parsley. The dough was a bit sticky but I just made sure to use a well-floured surface and added a bit when needed. These dog treats baked in 40 minutes and Grace was so excited to try one! She gobbled it down in seconds and every crumb too…I’d say she likes them.

  1. That is such an adorable picture of Grace! Those dog treats sound like people treats to me…or, at least without the parsley, they do. She’s so lucky to have you fussing over the bone cookie cutter!

Just making these. Added cinnamon for inflammatory purposes and it goes well with bananas! They smell awesome and were really easy to make.

My guess is that my baby, Lexii will love them! They’ll be done in 30 minutes, plus cooling down time for hardening. I’m rating the recipe early assuming they’ll be a big winner. If I don’t come back with a change in the comment, the 5-star rating holds!

    1. Shan,

I’ve never tried it but I assume it would work fine. Just use much less, maybe a 1/4 cup. Dried herbs are more potent than fresh herbs. Let me know how they turn out if you give the recipe a try.

Have made them multiple times now! I add 2 tbsp. Of chia seeds and flax seeds. Sometimes as a special treat I Use 1 Tbsp. Of bacon grease (usually fresh with no nitrates or nitrites used). I have also substituted fresh carrot tops instead of parsley when I don’t have any. There fantastic and use as gifts too!

My dog seems to like these a lot! I gave him one, and he’s still looking around the kitchen for more. Do you measure out the parsley before chopping it up? I measured it after, and I could only do 1/2 a batch b/c I didn’t realize how much 1 cup of chopped fresh parsley looks like. I didn’t have mint on hand so I excluded that, and I added 1 Tbsp of canned pumpkin to my 1/2 batch. I blended the oats in my Vitamix. For me at least, the batch was sticky, and even with flour, it was bit difficult to lift an uncooked cookie from my prep surface after using the dog bone cookie cutter. In order to preserve the shape, I used a fork to lift it. I think next time I’d use a simpler, sturdier shape, like a heart. But overall, great. It’s a unique recipe from all the banana PB dog treats out there 🙂

    1. Bubby’s Mom,

I do 1 cup of the parsley loosely packed then finely chop it. It is a very sticky dough and not super easy to transfer but making them in smaller sizes makes it much easier. I’m glad your pup is enjoying them.

I made these again today, without the pumpkin this time… just followed the recipe exact and doubled it. (By the way, in my initial comment, please ignore my mention of mint…i was confused with a diff recipe that I was thinking of trying). Anyways, this time around, the dough was still sticky, but easier to lift a pressed cookie off of the wax paper. This time instead of using a grater, I shredded baby carrots in my Vitamix on almost the lowest setting. It worked great. I’m wondering if I can do this with the parsley to save time bc cutting of the stems and chopping it up takes a bit of time! Next time I want to try using a grain-free flour that’s safe for dogs (like almond, chickpea or coconut flour), since oats are still a grain.

    1. Bubby’s Mom,

I love that you are adapting the recipe to make it your own. Using almond, chickpea, or coconut flour is a terrific idea! Thanks for taking the time to let me know that your dog is loving these treats.
