Sweet Potato and Oatmeal Dog Treats

These crisp and healthy sweet potato and oatmeal dog treats will be going in Grace’s Christmas stocking this year. I had one small sweet potato to use up so I created these dog treats along with mashed sweet potato, oatmeal, flour, egg, and a little cinnamon. These dog treats were quite simple to throw together and smelled pretty tasty while they baked. Grace was very eager to give them a taste test and she must have loved them because she devoured two in about 45 seconds and was pretty disappointed that she couldn’t have another one.

How to Make Sweet Potato and Oatmeal Dog Treats

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Boil the sweet potato over medium-high heat until very tender, about 10-12 minutes. Drain and mash the potato until creamy. Set aside to cool.

Once the potato has cooled, add the flour, oats, egg, and cinnamon. Mix until well combined. Add a touch more flour, if the dough is too wet.

Working on a floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using dog treat cutters, cut out desired shapes, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Bake until golden brown and crisp, about 25-30 minutes.

Cool completely on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container in the freezer or refrigerator. Enjoy.

  • 1 sweet potato, peeled & cut into same-sized chunks **Once mashed it should total 3/4 cup
  • cups whole wheat flour or all-purpose flour
  • cups instant oats
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

  1. My new golden and my old lab loved them. I ended up using cN sweet but rinsed them 1st. I also added a tablespoon of peanut butter

      They will only last maybe a week if stored at room temperature, they will eventually get moldy. I always keep mine in an airtight container in the freezer so they last for a long time.

    The batter was way too dry, so I added a cup of water and a quarter cup of honey. I sprinkled the tops with cinnamon before baking for 18 minutes
