Sweet Potato Dog Chews

Sweet potato dog chews are homemade dog treats that are healthy, inexpensive, and so easy to make!

Sweet Potato Dog Chews

Grace ran out of dog treats last week so I decided to make her a new batch this week. Instead of her regular baked or frozen treats, I decided to make her some sweet potato dog chews from a recipe I found on It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken.

Sweet potatoes are a great treat option for dogs since they are low in calories, provide a good source of fiber, and they contain vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as other important minerals including potassium and iron. These natural dog chews are also a great alternative to rawhide which makes my dog’s stomach upset. While doing some research, I discovered that potato peels are not good for a dog’s stomach and can be hard for them to digest so I made sure to peel the potatoes before I dehydrated them low and slow in the oven for about 3 hours.  Grace absolutely LOVES them and I have a feeling your dog will too!

How to Make Sweet Potato Dog Chews

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Peel the sweet potatoes then use a knife or mandoline to cut each sweet potato into 1/4-inch slices.  Side Note: You can cut them lengthwise for bigger dogs and into coins for medium to small dogs.

Arrange them in a single layer on the baking sheet and bake for 2 1/2-3 hours flipping them halfway through baking until they are shrunken and dried out. Some smaller pieces may be a little crispy but still very tasty.

Let the sweet potatoes cool completely before storing them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or store them in a sealed ziplock bag in the freezer for a couple of months. Enjoy!

I followed the directions to a ‘T’, but my chews are still soft in the middle- not just one – almost all of them. What’s the secret?

    1. Dana,

Best to use your discretion here and keep them in until they are dried enough for your liking. I live at sea level and it may take more time depending on where you live. Either way, I’m sure your pup will love them.
