Apple, Bacon, and Cheddar Dog Treats
Four years ago we brought home our Gracie girl from the Oregon Humane Society. What a wonderful blessing she turned out to be! We all, friends included, absolutely adore Grace. She is smart, funny, loyal, and always happy to see a familiar face. In honor of her adoption anniversary, I decided to bake her some apple, bacon, and cheddar dog treats today, along with an extra-long walk, lots of ball throwing, and extra hugs. I found a great recipe over at The Cottage Market that I knew she would LOVE! Apple? Bacon? Cheddar? Perfect. She literally drools when we bring out her treats…she absolutely loves them!
How to Make Apple, Bacon, and Cheddar Dog Treats
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with a Silpat mat.
Combine the butter, olive oil, and egg together with a whisk until well combined. Add the milk and grated apple then whisk. Add the whole wheat flour and white flour; mix until just combined. Add most of the cheddar, bacon, and parsley. Mix until combined. Side Note: If it’s too sticky, add a bit more flour. If it’s too dry, add a bit more milk.
On a lightly floured work surface, knead the dough for 30 seconds until smooth. Roll out the dough into a 10-inch circle, about 1/2 inch thick. Sprinkle some of the remaining bacon bits, cheese, and parsley on the dough then lightly press down. Using a dog treat cookie cutter, cut out the dog bones.
Carefully place the bones onto the prepared baking sheet. Place into the preheated oven.
Bake until lightly golden, 20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for 6 months.

Wow that looks good enough for humans as well as dogs 🙂 Glad Gracie has found such a good home. Diane
She is such a sweet gal! Those dog treats look so good, Pam.
Woof, woof! I want one of these, too. 😀
How cool. We are alike in many ways. I make our dog, Star, her own treats with peanut butter and she can’t get enough. Your recipe looks great.
delicious! she’s just adorable, and i have no doubt she deserves ALL of the treats. 🙂
Oh yum… My pup would totally be into these!!! Gracie is adorable 🙂
How much flour?
Margaret,

What about dogs with grain allergies
Would I be able to use just coconut flour? If so, how much would I use? I want to make these for my American bulldog, but it has to be grain free. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful recipe!
Michelle,
I am so sorry to say I’ve never worked with coconut flour so I am not sure how it would do in this recipe. Here is a link to an article that may help.

Our Cayenne loves these. I’ll be making this recipe for the third time
I used the recipe as is and with coconut flour. When using coconut flour the ratio is 1\3 cup for a cup of flour and an extra egg.
Can these be left on a counter instead of refrigerating them?
Melinda,
You can but they will go bad/moldy more quickly than if you have them in the fridge or freezer.

Delicious– say my dogs and me! Yes, I tried one. Such a lovely presentation of this recipe. My dogs were salivating just looking at the photo of this treat!
Patrice,
I’m so glad you both like them! My Gracie girl loves these treats–I think they may be her favorite. Thanks for taking the time to let me know.
-Pam
How long will these last in room temperature, fridge vs freezer? Thanks!
Chelsea,
I doubt they would last long before getting moldy but I’ve never given it a try–I always store them in the freezer.

Can I use oat flour instead of AP and wheat?
Deborah,
I can’t say for sure because I’ve never tried it but it may work just fine. If you give it a try, please let me know how it turns out.
