Sweet Potato and Apple Dog Treats

Sweet Potato and Apple Dog Treats

Our dog Grace recently ran out of homemade treats, so I went in search of ingredients to make her a new batch. I found a few sweet potatoes, whole wheat flour, a large apple, and some eggs. I roasted the sweet potatoes until tender, then tossed the cooled mixture with grated apple, eggs, and whole wheat flour. The treats turned out to be quite a temptation for my girl, and she was super excited to taste one for the camera. These homemade sweet potato and apple dog treats disappeared quickly, and so did any crumbs left behind.

Place into the oven and roast for 30-40 minutes, or until very tender. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Reduce the oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Scoop out the cooled insides of the sweet potatoes into a large mixing bowl; discard the skins. Add the grated apple and eggs to the bowl. Slowly add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing well between each addition.

Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to ¼-inch thickness. Use more flour as needed.

Use a dog treat cutter to cut out the desired shape, and place it on the prepared baking sheet.

Place in the oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely on a wire cooling rack.

Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator or freezer. My dog loves them right out of the freezer. Enjoy.

This came together as a gooey mess. I added more and more flour to create dough and put into the refrigerator to try to harden the dough. Any suggestions? I ended up just making balls because there was no chance of rolling and cutting unless I added tons of flour.

    1. Kristin,

I’m wondering if your apple was extra juicy? Patting the grated apple dry with a tea towel (or paper towel) will help. Also, maybe your eggs were larger than the ones I used. Working on a well-floured surface will also help, but adding more flour to balance the moisture is the key. I’m sorry you had a tough time–I hope your dog loves them anyway!
