Roasted Tomato and Fresh Basil Pizza Sauce
My friend recently told me to try the herb pizza dough at Trader Joe’s because she loves it, so I grabbed one and planned to make a homemade pizza for dinner. I decided to make some roasted tomato and fresh basil p[pizza sauce with some tomatoes my mom gave me. It was pretty easy to make and tasted SO MUCH BETTER than any store-bought sauce!
Roasted Tomato and Fresh Basil Pizza Sauce
Ingredients
- 8 miscellaneous tomatoes, cored & halved
- 1 large clove of garlic, cut into slivers
- Onion powder, to taste
- Oregano, to taste
- Crushed red pepper flakes, to taste
- Sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste
- 3 tbsp tomato paste
- 3 tbsp fresh basil chopped finely
How to Make Roasted Tomato and Fresh Basil Pizza Sauce
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with tin foil then coat with cooking spray.
Place the tomato halves on the baking sheet then slide slivers of garlic stuck into each tomato half. Season the tomatoes with onion powder, oregano, crushed red pepper flakes, sea salt, and freshly cracked pepper, to taste, along with a drizzle of olive oil.
Place into the oven and roast for 35-45 minutes, or until soft and juicy.
Remove from the oven and pour the tomatoes and juices into a saucepan along with the tomato paste and cook over low heat. Simmer until tomatoes reduce, about 10 minutes.
Blend with an immersion blender until smooth.
Place the lid halfway on the pan and continue to simmer until reduced enough for the sauce to coat the back of a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Taste and re-season, if needed.
Add the fresh chopped basil to the sauce and stir to combine. Let cool.
Spread sauce on pizza dough as needed then store in the refrigerator or freezer.

I’ve had that TJ’s herb pizza dough and it’s delicious. This pizza sauce with that dough would be amazing!
I love making my own pizza sauce, especially with roasted tomatoes!
I’ve not really tried making pizza sauce; I just take my basic marinara, add more tomatoes, and chop with the immersion blender. Your sauce looks wonderful; you know I’m still jealous of your tomato bounty. It’s too bad you can’t get home grown tomatoes all year! But now you’ve planted an idea in my head: I’ll bet Mark would like pizza for dinner on Friday night!

Another wonderful sauce. You sure were lucky to get those tomatoes.
This post makes me sad…….only because we left our basil out one night too long and a freeze killed it 🙁 I guess I can go buy some fresh basil but that forces me to admit that summer is over!
Roasted tomatoes add so much great flavor to any sauce! Definitely better than anything you can get in a jar.
