The Perfect Soft Boiled Egg
The older I get the more I love eggs – especially over easy, poached, or soft boiled. I recently realized that I had never made a soft-boiled egg as an adult but I remember my mom making them a lot when I was younger. She would boil the egg then add a dab of butter, salt, and pepper into a small dish before peeling the egg and putting it into the dish, and mixing it all up. I remember dipping my toast into the perfectly cooked egg mixed with the butter and I LOVED it! I decided to try making a soft-boiled egg and after a few attempts, I think I have found the way to make a perfect soft-boiled egg. The whites are cooked but the yolk is still runny. I serve it on buttered toast and it is absolutely delicious.
How to Make The Perfect Soft Boiled Egg
Heat an inch of water in a small saucepan over medium-high heat until boiling. Add the egg, reduce the heat to medium, and cover with a lid. Let the egg cook for 6 minutes then remove it from the stove. Side Note: if you are using a jumbo-sized egg, cook for 6 minutes & 30 seconds.
Run the saucepan and egg under cold water until the egg is cool enough to be handled. Using a knife, crack the top edge of the egg then gently peel, making sure to be careful so you don’t puncture the egg.
Once it is peeled, place on a piece of buttered toast, slice down the center with a knife, season with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste then dig in. Enjoy!

Sounds delicious! I love any kind of eggs when the yolks are still runny –yum!
This is my kind of breakfast! Yum!
looks perfect for breakfast 🙂
i’ve never prepared an egg like this, though i’m sure i’d love it. runny egg yolks used to disgust me but now i absolutely love them!
I accidentally made a soft boiled egg once…. and LOVED it. I try to “accidentally” do it at least once a month now! lol To me, the only way to truly enjoy an egg is if you can dunk toast into the yolk!! YUM!
Runny yolks are the best! All I need is a piece of toast and I am in heaven.
This is the best way to eat an egg in my opinion. I could put one of those on top of so many things and be very happy!
I definitely appreciate eggs much more now than i did when i was younger! Love that runny yolk.
I eat a hardboiled egg every morning, but am growing kind of tired of it. I think making them soft boiled once in a while would get me to love eggs again! Thanks, Pam.
Your soft boiled egg does look quite perfect! A lovely breakfast.
Looks perfect Pam and I like a good soft boiled egg, but never tried to peel one. We always just cracked it thru the middle and scooped each side out with a spoon – not nearly as pretty as yours.
This egg look perfect and delicious Pam!
I love the shot of that broken egg! It has the perfect, oozy texture – yum!
My mom always used to make me these when I was a kid and I loved them. I’ve wondered how to make them but never got around to looking it up. Thanks so much! I had this for dinner last night over some refried beans and it was awesome!
Just found tomorrows breakfast!
Apparently simple things are often the most difficult to achieve and your eggs just look perfect. Congratulations on such a beautiful presentation 🙂
Pam me encanta cuando el huevo está roto está muy delicioso, saludos y abrazos
I always loved egg and still love it. When I am the only one to eat dinner my breakfast of soft poached egg or in any form is my dinner. Love it.
I love soft boiled eggs too. This one looks perfect.
Tis the perfect egg.
Love egg too, the older I got.
They are so versatile and good for you.
I tried this & it was a perfect soft boiled egg! I will be using this method from now on — Thanks!
We made these camping today and they are absolutely amazing! The only thing was they didn’t look as perfect as this photo. Pam how did you make the flat, round shape? Ours kept the egg shape and we just cut it in half over the bread.

Shae,
Mine was a perfect egg shape too until I sliced it. The egg flattened when the yolk leaked out. I am glad you loved them!
Pam
It never occurred to me to peel a sb egg, I tried this method and it came out perfect. The minute I cut into the egg, it looked just like your photo. Delicious! I love poached eggs, but these are actually easier.
That looks amazing. I haven’t tried this before, but I do love runny eggs (overmedium) so I have a feeling this will be perfect!
I just read about this way to cook eggs on Larry’s blog. I’m going right into the kitchen and try it out. I love poached eggs and think this would be easier if I can peel them without breaking the yolk.
I have fond memories of my mom’s soft boiled eggs on toast. I will try this, it sounds perfect, and will be my comfort breakfast food. Works great with new diet requiring protein breakfast.
Tried it and it really was perfect!! Finally after so many recipes i got it to where i could peel it!
Wow,my girl just made this for me as I’m feeling under the weather, hit the Spot.
looks like these eggs came out of an egg poacher as you would never get that shape boiling them.
Donna,
They actually looked just like a hard boiled egg after being peeled until I slice it open then if flattened out as the yolk left the egg. It was NOT cooked in an egg poacher.
Pam
Great advice, my whites are always a little undercooked near the yolk. In UK we cut the toast into strips and tell our children they are soldiers, we leave the egg in the shell and take off the top, adding the salt and pepper, the soldiers are then dipped in the egg and are devoured, the White is removed with the aid of a teaspoon.
