I had some leftover mashed potatoes to use up and I wanted to make something different from my usual potato pancakes. While looking online, I found this recipe on The Frugal Girl for potato bread that looked delicious and it would pair nicely with the beer cheese soup I was making for dinner. I used my bread machine to do the dough mixing and rising but baked it in my oven after a second rise in the loaf pan. The bread smelled amazing when it came out of the oven and tasted wonderful. We all thought it was fluffy, flavorful, and delicious and it was delicious dipped in our soup.

How to Make Potato Bread

Place the warmed water, warmed leftover mashed potatoes, melted butter, sugar, salt, flour, and yeast into a bread machine pan in that order. Turn the bread machine to the dough setting and push start.

Once the dough cycle has been completed (mine lasts 1½ hours).

Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Form the dough into a roll and place it into a loaf pan coated with cooking spray.

Cover with a cloth and let rise, until doubled in size, about 60 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the loaf pan into the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before putting on a cooling rack to continue cooling. Slice and serve slathered in butter. Enjoy.

  • 1 package active dry yeast

  1. And you never thought you could make yeast bread. That looks terrific! I’ve used instant potato flakes in a pinch for potato bread, and it’s just as delicious that way, too!
