Mashed Sweet Potatoes

I realized the other day that I have never made a mashed sweet potato recipe. I was making a delicious roasted chicken recipe with garlicky spinach and thought mashed sweet potatoes would be a perfect side dish. The potatoes cooked quickly and came together quite easily, and we loved the buttery flavor with a touch of nutmeg.
Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Ingredients:
- 3 large sweet potatoes, peeled & cut into 2-inch pieces
- ¼-½ cup of milk
- 3 tbsp butter
- Sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste
- Pinch of fresh nutmeg, ground, to taste
How to Make Mashed Sweet Potatoes:
Put the peeled and chopped sweet potatoes in a large pot of well-salted cold water. Bring to a light boil and cook until tender, about 15 minutes.
Place milk, butter, sea salt, and freshly cracked pepper in a glass bowl and microwave for 30-45 seconds, or until warmed and the butter has melted.
Drain and return potatoes to the pot. Return the pot to the stove over low heat for a minute or two to dry up any excess water from the potatoes. Remove from the stove.
Add the warmed milk mixture and mash with a hand mixer, stand mixer, or hand masher until smooth. Taste and add more salt or nutmeg if needed.
Serve and enjoy.

Other than in a sweet dish, I’m not sure if I’ve ever had mashed sweet potatoes either – yous look very good. Our favorite way is just baked and treated like an Irish potato with butter, S&P.
That’s my favorite dish of Thanksgiving. Even over the turkey! I think it’s probably a southern thing?
While I do love the humble white potato, sweet potatoes and yams are my favorite. I don’t think to serve them mashed often, though. Thanks for the reminder and the recipe. I wish you and yours a blessed Thanksgiving, Pam!
So delicious and great for a change of pace.
I have a couple of sweet potatoes that I have every intention of mashing. I’ve never done it before. So it was fun your blog addressed that. It was like you were talking to me directly. Smiles—–
Confession…I have never made mashed sweet potatoes! I have baked them, roasted them and candied them, though, and love them. I must try them mashed!
Look delicious! I love sweet potatoes!
I love sweet potatoes! This is definitely my ideal holiday side dish.
I never think to mash sweet potatoes like white potatoes, Pam. I reallly should remember more often. They are so yummy especially with a dash of nutmeg.
Thanks so much for sharing…
I always prefer mashed sweet taters to regular ones. So good!
