Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes
This sloppy joe recipe isn’t a culinary masterpiece, but it is a quick and easy dinner for a busy weeknight. I wasn’t in the mood for anything fancy, and I was tired, so I threw some ingredients together and made sloppy joes. We don’t like a very sweet sloppy joe, so I used little sugar, and we thought they turned out tasty. I paired these sloppy joes with baked jo jo potatoes, a garden salad, and spicy watermelon wedges. My husband and kids loved this dinner, and I was thankful for how easy it was to prepare.

Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1½ lbs of ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • ¼ orange bell pepper, diced
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried mustard
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 cup of ketchup
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp brown sugar, or more if you want it sweeter
  • Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • Hamburger buns, toasted if desired

How to Make Sloppy Joes:

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook for 3-4 minutes, breaking it up into crumbles.

Add the onion, bell pepper, and celery, and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until softened.

Add the garlic, dried mustard, and paprika, and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute.

Drain any grease from the skillet.

Add ketchup, water, and brown sugar, then season with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste.

Stir and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Taste and re-season if needed.

Spoon on a toasted hamburger bun. Enjoy.

  16. The sloppy joes look great! Does it make a difference to sautee the onions and vegetables and then do the meat?

  17. Danny,

You can saute the veggies first then cook the meat. I just did it all together because it was easier. Hope you enjoy!

  19. I wanted to say I love all your recipes on here and can not wait to try them. I was wondering though if you or anyone has tried ground turkey breast for their sloppy joes instead of ground beef? It is a great alternative and healthier too! And let me just say ever since I have tried it I have not gone back to ground beef in my sloppy joes yet!
