Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes
I made a pork tenderloin for dinner recently and paired it with these buttermilk mashed potatoes. I loved how tangy and creamy the buttermilk made these potatoes. I may never go back to regular mashed potatoes–they were that good!
How to Make Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes
Peel and cut the potatoes. Place them, along with a sprinkling of salt, into a large saucepan and add enough water to cover the potatoes by 1 inch. Bring the water to a boil over high heat then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-18 minutes. Drain the potatoes.
Place the butter into the buttermilk and heat in the microwave for 30 seconds. Pour the milk mixture onto the potatoes then season with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste. Mash the potatoes using a hand masher until creamy and smooth. Place into a serving bowl and serve immediately. Enjoy.
Ingredients
- 4 russet potatoes scrubbed, peeled, and cut into 1-inch chunks

I never crave mashed potatoes, but started to the other day for some reason. I made up a batch, but now seeing these, I want to make another!!
The kid loves mashed potatoes! I’ll have to make them with buttermilk next time!
I LOVE mashed potatoes. I’ve never made them with buttermilk…they look and sound delicious! The next time I make mashed potatoes I will try your recipe. Thanks, Pam!
As a long time fan, I think buttermilk makes about everything better.
Just what I needed – a super easy recipe to whip up on Thanksgiving 🙂
Just in time for Thanksgiving! I may try this for my hungry hordes.
Comfort food!
I use buttermilk in a lot of my baking, but I have never tried it in mashed potatoes. If you are interested in learning how to save $ by stretching your buttermilk, I have a post about it on my blog. I usually use cream cheese in my mashed potatoes, but I think I will give buttermilk a try for the tang. Thanks for the suggestion and the recipe. Pam!
I have never made mashed potatoes with buttermilk and now I can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing, Pam.
I prepared these last night with Yukon Golds. Fabulous!
I’m not sure that my future MIL will let me take over mashed potato duty this year…but obviously I’ll just have to make them after the holiday!
